I read the first Volume like two decades ago, with The Filth. I lend them to a friend (and now are lost forever).

I had never read the Doom Patrol run after Grant Morrison left until now. A trans woman, Rachel Pollack, takes over the series and I'm mentioning this at all because it's quite funny. First of all, they move to a house full of sex ghosts living out fetishes that are referred to as SRS. Little on the nose, but a decent enough pun I suppose. Then they introduce a former prostitute drawn as an entirely passable woman with zero hints who has gained powers and spend about five issues dropping hints that SHE'S NOT A CIS WOMAN but CLIFF STEELE IS ATTRACTED ANYWAY WON'T HE BE SURPRISED. (Don't worry, he'll be understanding and true love will win out. Not that they can even have sex because Cliff is a robot.)

At this point, if it's not obvious this is a mary sue expy, we get an entire multi-issue plotline where the bad guys are the ones who imposed not only language but gender on humanity in order to control us and place us inside a box and suck out our life forces so we just mindlessly serve rather than feel anything. The good guys are all genderless emotional free spirits in touch with every aspect of the universe. At the same time that all of this is being explained incoherently at extensive length the trans woman character lectures Cliff that they were always a woman and they always knew they were a woman and we get a backstory that consists entirely of they tried to wear a dress one time as a kid. Also Cliff is the idiot cis normie who keeps asking obviously stupid and embarrassing questions so the trans woman can put him in his place over and over again in brave and stunning fashion where the reader stands and claps.

They're also the only character that can defeat the bad guys because they're also the only one in connection with the genderless free past of emotions and those entities. (Even as this raises the question of why they're trying to impose gender like the bad guys.) And the way to defeat them is that the trans woman's soul has to merge with Cliff's robot body through both having orgasms* which turns into a hermaphrodite body followed by like two issues of drivel about this being so strange yet so right culminating with the trans woman soul grabbing the robot's breasts and exclaiming how this is what she wanted. (Then all of this sort of turns out not to matter at all because the genderless things do some deus ex machina instead.)

It just really amused me to read. Over thirty years ago and literally all the same shit.

From what I understand, degrowth is just about reducing avenues of waste and overconsumption by organizing society in such a way that to do so is extremely difficult to impossible. We already know that people in the Global North on average use way more utilities and throw away more food than they actually need to sustain a good life. I would also argue that societal changes to more communal amenities that offset individual need for energy would actually be a boon to quality of life. More social services, walkable cities, mixed living, and excellent public transportation? Sounds like a paradise to me. As would knowing that we, like, reformed our food systems do that all of it of it is actually going into people's stomachs and being recycled and reutilized in agriculture rather than throw out because of arbitrary dates or because it doesn't look like a perfect crop.

Ultimately though, arguing that capitalism is not the primary issue with the climate doesn't make sense. The more people consume, the more energy will need to be produced, the bigger the load on the planet. We cannot just continue buying nonsense into infinity and not expect ecological consequences. Nothing lasts forever and we've had a good 200 year-ish run of absolutely ravaging the planet and its most vulnerable inhabitants.

Also, another post where she expresses that there will be mass policing and violence to suppress anyone from using more than they "actually need" in her paradise.

Not going to relitigate any past interparty drama because it literally isn't relevant, but cooperation is simply the only way forward. It's not about biting your tongue or having to capitulate on your morals, it's knowing when to keep the main thing the main thing and build out a firm coalition.

What is the "main thing" though?

I continuously ask about what liberals/Democrats are actually looking for, what is their ultimate vision of society. Specifically, in the examples of threads where Democrats are focusing on social media outreach, what is the message they actually plan to send to folks once they get their attention? What is the platform? What is the vision? Give it to me in one sentence.

Gonna be honest. I don't know what Democratic voters actually want beyond maybe protections for minorities. But this desire is inherently contradicted by these same voters steadfast insistence on capitalism because capitalism is the system which is producing the inequalities harming the minorities they claim to care about. It doesn't work.

"Yeah, we want Black people to feel safe, but also we need more money for police to combat all the fucking crime those Blacks are doing, and the well-being and autonomy of Africa is not in our political purview at all. Yeah, we want queer people to have rights, but trans people aren't a winning issue to the moms and pops in the Midwest so we can renege a little on our commitment to them when electorally convenient. Certainly, we're not for genocide because that harms people, unless the existence of those people is a problem for our economic interests in the Middle East, so how dare you advocate for the lives of those animals? Yeah, we care about the environment, but the production and consumption underlying the planet heating up must go up because everyone wants a wasteful lifestyle and we're the Party that's good for the economy (aka, good for the capitalists.) Did I mention our Presidential candidate won't ban fracking?"

At this point, "Big Tent" just means "a string of contradictions." There's no logical throughline connecting all of these different demographics and interests together, no unity, no guiding vision. At this point, I frankly do not trust the Democratic Party to be fully committed to the interests of human well-being because someone in that "Big Tent" might have a fucking problem with caring about other human beings.

I want no part of it anymore until you all fucking figure out some actual principles that cannot be discarded for convenience. I'm not gonna stick my neck and vote out for you if in the end there's a non-zero possibility you will leave me out to dry.

People who keep saying that they're not asking people to compromise on their core principles, but to simply just work together with people who might differ ideologically from them in some way, are not understanding that a lot of these seemingly minor ideological disagreements ultimately stem from a disagreement about core principles. These core principles, whether a result of actual safety and protection for the minorities that tend to make up progressive movements, or as a result of actually trying to define a movement's goals and not water down the messaging, lose focus, or get co-opted by people who align themselves with the status quo despite all their bawking about the contrary- that, no for realsies, they're totally trustworthy allies (so long as you always do what they say)- also do not have the luxury of being overridden or cast aside by more minor ideological unity.

I'm not going to blindly invite you into my coalition because we agree that universal healthcare is good but yet you're okay with genocide occurring. It doesn't mean I necessarily have to cast you away immediately though; the short-term goal should be to debunk that harmful belief by whatever means necessary. Indeed, I am a fan of education, but education in a political sense must be in pursuit of folding the masses- who are primed to be disaffected by the status quo but, inevitably, hold harmful beliefs as a result of being forced to live in and be subservient to that status quo- into the movement. But you cannot have a successful movement that is based upon the principles of anti-genocide and anti-privatized healthcare if only a minority of the people actually believe in both!

Everyone has red lines (anyone who says they don't at all is either a liar or the Devil). Progressives simply have more of them, both in the understanding that this current world is fraught with contradictions that can be solved, and also in the pursuit of a newly-imagined world which is the hard-mode road of life to go down. Anyone can comfortably nestle themselves into conservatism and capitalism. It is the order of the day and thus requires little thought and critique. Progressives are more apt to not accept that.

The good news from where I'm standing is that a lot of things that leftists want are already popular opinion in the American consciousness.

For example, most people actually do want gun control, so there's no need to waste time under the presumption that the inertia we see on the issue is because popular sentiment lies with the gun nuts, and subsequently we don't get mired down in stupid debates that only mean to kick the can down the road. There is honestly no "both sides" to many issues that the media tries to present as such. If you know the material reality of any issue going in, you can then deal with the actual problem: in this case, NRA lobbying and bad court interpretations of the Second Amendment.

This isn't to say that these two things aren't massive hurdles to get through. It's to say that we need to get better at understanding where we actually stand in the thick of these issues, because this allows us to determine where our energy is best suited in actually solving problems. It also prevents the paralysis you see so often in capitalist realism, wherein the existence of some opposition means that a fight is actually happening on equivalent footing, and thus we're at a stalemate and there's nothing to do about it aside from trying to convince "hearts and minds," which your political opponents want you to do, btw, because the longer you spend trying to convince them of something that they are never going to agree with you on, the less time you have to actually organize into a meaningful political force. Don't fall for that okeydoke. Social conservatives sure don't, and they are the fucking statistical minority!

Basically, if milk is spilled, there's no need to sit around wondering on whether or not the household wants to clean it up because the fish in your fish tank don't have an opinion on the issue. It's clear the majority want it clean, so that isn't the problem. The problem might be you don't have any paper towels to get it up, or you spilled it on carpet and lack the necessary cleaning agents to make sure that area won't stink later.

Dialectical 👏🏿 Materialism 👏🏿 Use it to your advantage to address problems in the real world instead of fighting with idiots who literally don't matter!

I don't know if this has been posted in the thread for the DC skins but Fortnite has added multiple female skins with boob jiggle physics this year. Three of them are collab skins, Meg from Hercules, Mercy from Overwatch and Kafka from Honkai Star Rail. I have the maybe controversial opinion that is that yes, everyone does write *themselves*, if not their fantasies. People can be more or less cognizant and/or subtle in the effort, but I do think ALL writers do this.

At the very least I find it super engaging to view all events/characters/interactions in a narrative as some metaphorical reflection of the writer’s interiority.
