If you're in Chicago try some deep dish pizza like Giodarno's.  Not a big fan of it myself, but it is a quintessential midwest food.

for well known burgers in the US I always think of Jack in the Box = west coast, Five Guys = east coast (even though both are kind of all over)

Never heard of Jack in the Box. Sorry.

Five Guys were good burgers. But I've had them in Aus.

I think in a contest most people would say Jack in the Box is better, they have a "secret sauce" which is a combo of ketchup/mustard/mayo/A1 steak sauce/Worcestershire and hot sauce

probably not worth a special trip unless you're stuck in LA for a day
