And an artist making money from their work isn't doing anything wrong. But an artist who scales their operation to the point where profit must inevitably come from underpaying workers (because that's literally what profit is) is engaging in capitalism.

At that point, why not play one of the earlier Civilizations that was actually built around playing as a single civ? Civ 7 was never made for what they're now turning it into, so whatever vision they once had is now muddled and gone.

That is what people did. It's kind of hard to sell civ 7 DLC to someone you told to just play earlier civs though.

like, fucking obviously their game didn't land, you don't want your game to be controversial and drive away the faithful player base, a muddied vision that gives people what they want and increases sales is better than a shit vision

see...tons of games in recent memory like Fallout 76, which had a glorious vision of "no NPCs" and "mandatory PVP combat" which they folded on and it's the only thing limping the game along

The Civs in Civ are barely even nations except in name only. From Civ V on your cities aren't even all of one "nation" in terms of ethnicity.

It's a nonsense complaint, you might as well demand that the player not be able to make any choices and it should be left to a democracy of the AI citizens to decide everything. No matter what civics and government you adopt ingame, it will always be a despotism of the player. Which normalizes Trump.

The more I think about it, the dumber the complaint about "nationalism" in Civ seems. Literally everything about the limitations of the Civs in the game exists because 1.) too many Civs slows things to a crawl (you can add like 30+ Civs in the recent games in a custom game, go do it, it's hilarious) and 2.) there's only so many things the player, and thus the Civs, are allowed to do in the first place. So they're treated as "nations" even though they aren't, they're civilizations. But if you had them act as actual civilizations, the player would have nothing at all to do because civilizations aren't directed by a single force towards any single goal. In Civ, they are. But because Civ portrays a fictional history and uses actual world names, it blends the history of civilizations and nations into one. In our world, there essentially aren't French, English and German civilizations, they're all the Western civilization now. You can't do this in Civ because the history is completely different and fictional, the civs never blend, they only conquer.

Humankind did this and took the naming partially away from the player but the history remained, your civ evolves into the new ones. Civ VII doesn't do this, it alters the civilizations based on the era. (Ripping off the highest level of Humankind's evolutions.) Which is stupid and just as nationalistic.

I'm sure there's people who play Civ as a single Civ and do it to enjoy their own country dominating the entire world but I doubt it's a major part of the player base let alone the people who complained about this the most.
