The part that drives me crazy is that the games are absolutely choked through with filler to justify the "full length RPG" claim. It's really frustrating that they clearly do not have anywhere close to enough story to make a whole trilogy out of VII so it's just filler and dumb fanfic nonsense designed to make the games meet an arbitrary "30-40 hours, therefore real RPG" playtime.

Well he's incorrect in calling it arbitrary. They deliberately created a product designed to meet average consumer standards so it would sell to more than just the diehards, without having to deal with the probably impossible concept of emulating overworld traversal at that graphical fidelity on the PS4. They did their job in that sense, and I swear he used to claim they would need a half dozen games to do the story and world justice. Now he's shitting on a focused trilogy and wishes we had been able to date miscreants on the streets of upper Midgar. There is simply no pleasing this guy.

By the way I guarantee he makes a reference to the mammoth icicle that almost killed him when he reaches and complains about the snowboarding section.

Honestly though, the original was already a 90s monster of the week type deal besides a few places. That's typical of JRPGs and most anime, especially when the party travels across an entire planet. You could cut the Cloud/Sephiroth stuff down to a few hours total.

They've got their work cut out for them with Rebirth to make most locations interesting when part of what was nice before was that you only had to spend 5-10 minutes in the shittier places. And if they still do the excessive backtracking of Disc 2, these games will continue to have a ceiling of 87 on metacritic. Which is good but not great.
