Yep i agree. I personally think specifically the platform OTs are a big part of what fosters this us vs them rhetoric that appears in a lot of gaming topics.

I'm going to be real, it's less the platform OTs and more the community discords and there's only so much we can do about that. Shoot, I routinely get accused of taking a bribe as a result of nonsense from one particular discord. We banned a guy the other day for toxic nonsense and they proceeded to stalk me and make the accusation in a discord I happen to be in. They literally joined the discord to do it.

The most toxic stuff doesn't happen in the OTs, the talk in the OTs is generally on topic and not bad. The issues generally come from discord nonsense.

It is the exact same dynamic in a bunch of them. Specific mods get blamed for specific bans even if they didn't have a hand in said ban, while other mods are the heroes because they are viewed as being "on our side"  despite being the ones who actually issued the ban that pissed said discord off.

A big problem in these spaces is that we can shuffle the warriors and more toxic personalities off the forum, but they will stick around in the discords for years and years spewing all kinds of nonsense that nobody wants to challenge because that would put them on the outside of the in-group.

Your own moderation team locked a thread and told people to go to a Hasan OT to talk about him abusing a dog, only for these people to then get dog piled by HasanEra after they let out the Discord call. Y'all ain't slick.

Just FYI but "I bet they all play on mobile" and other similar comments are so deeply rooted in sexism and it permeates the industry.

I once consulted on a game that had a male protagonist by default and when I asked why that decision was made, the lead of the game said it was because the people who would play it are men.

I then showed him data that said most of his player base, if the game was marketed correctly, would actually be women.

The process of denial afterwards despite multiple data points supporting me was a trip and a half.

Before people spread more sexist bullshit:
21% of women play on consoles (27% for men)
15% of women play on PC (27% for men)

So it's not sexist to say they play more on mobile? It's FACTUALLY CORRECT?

It honestly makes me wonder just how much and hard the devs of Shadow had to fight to include Yasuke. We know Ubisoft's higher up refused to allow a playable woman in the Assassin's Creed games without being chaperoned by a man (Kassandra was supposed to be the sole protag of Odyssey but the higher ups refused unless they made her brother playable because "women don't sell").

We're kind of long past the point where we use anecdotes and gut feelings. Men should question why the spaces they are in are male dominated when the hobby itself isn't.

To be fair, a lot of the male dominantes are dedicarles to games mainly popular between men.

The game hobbie may not be dominated by men. However, there are still games mainly attracting men.

In itself, I don't think it's bad there are games mainly directed to men.
