You have to start somewhere. Kids can also still find ways to smoke or drink alcohol. Doesn't mean we should lower the age to 13 years old. And I agree wholeheartedly that social media is this generations smoking/drinking is bad for you, times 10.

And another reminder that Adolescence on Netflix is a perfect capture of what it can do to kids, even if parents think they are keeping an eye on things.

Kinda sick of these conspiracy theories tbh. They assume these social media tech companies are somehow more to be trusted than governments and also assume that age verification is only possible by de-anonymization.

It is not even entirely about the algorithms. Even if there were zero bots or extreme alt-right propaganda, kids need to learn to interact IRL with other kids to develop their social skills, instead of chasing likes and views on their social media. It is unhealthy. If an age barrier helps with that I think it is a good start, just like they do for buying alcohol or cigarettes. there is no 100% foolproof way to prevent kids from using it, but we should discourage it where possible.

We need to cut these american owned social media platforms from their influence around the world. It is insane how far we have let this go.
