I have some really big news that I'm going to share with this thread.

First the good bit:

I had my interview with the addiction charity that I applied to volunteer for today and it went swimmingly. With just one introduction about who I am I had already answered all six questions they wanted to ask me about why I was applying. And they're eager for me to come on board with their team as a direct result.

Working in addiction recovery was not what I set out for when I started out in life, I don't think I ever really set out to do much at all really. But everyone here has been witness to my journey, from the terrible wreck of a person that I was to where I now stand today. Helping others who struggle the way I struggled, be it maintaining their addiction or guiding them through recovery, is the most important thing in the world to me now.

And there's no easy way of saying this, but it's exactly why I'm going to move straight into...

The Bad News

As a result, it's also because of this that I am making the decision to retire from Resetera. While I won't be asking for an account ban (Unless I have zero self control, in which case I will ask for a more strict enforcement by the admins.) as I'd like to keep access to positive memories I have made here, I also must stress this isn't a temporary vacation. This is me saying farewell, as I take this step into the next chapter of my life.

This is not the fault of any individual member or event, so I don't want anyone worrying they did anything to bring this on. However, it's not exactly unpopular sentiment that Resetera is an incredibly draining place to communicate, even at the best of times. And I'm going to be working with incredibly vulnerable people who are actively abusing substances and will be themselves draining to work with as a result. I can't afford to give myself empathy burnout arguing the toss over utterly meaningless bollocks with people on the internet. It's my responsibility to the customers I will be working with, to the people here I have come to call my friends, and to myself.

I turned 19 months sober yesterday. I make this step a healthier, happier person than the one I was a year and a half ago. With the support of people here, I didn't just heal, you have saved my life and bought me the time I needed to build one somewhat worth living. And it's through your support that I now move forward trying to help save the lives of others.

To my cherished friends of UK era, I love you all very much.

I'm an unemployed game dev who will start working at trader joes or costco before I apply to work for Jared fucking Kirshner and that journalist killing Saudi, and I've skipped applying for quite a few other jobs because the company websites have gone full chud-style culture war nonsense. I don't WANT to leave the game industry but if it comes down to something I am not willing to accept or leaving the industry then I will leave the industry (again)

That ban reason is just code word for “you exposed an issue with our forum that we like to pretend doesn’t exist”

This was one of old GAF's bigger issues too and REEEE, despite all the "we're going to do it right this time" lip-service, fell into a lot of the same traps GAF moderation did. They also initially talked about mods not being pseudo-celebrities and posters being forced to walk on eggshells around them, but here we are. It still feels like a blackbox, the moderation is heavy-handed and we know they have mod-only discords where they talk shit on posters. 

2017 GAF felt like North Korea with the guards always watching and listening. Posters would get disappeared and sometimes you'd never really know why. Don't question the system. 2026 REEE is more like some kind of nightmare Catholic preschool where the evil nuns with itchy trigger fingers are just waiting to dole out corporal punishment on the children for wrongthink.

My favorite was their publicly proclaiming that everyone would be free to start fresh even if they had been banned from GAF while they were privately assuring former GAF mods they were on the lookout for and stopping users the GAF mods were sharing lists of.

Also how they said there would be no junior shaming this time, then they dish out severe bans for being in and publicly label accounts as "junior status" even if they have been around for years with hundreds of posts.

Well, when Trump was out of power and briefly out of (or well, less in) the news, there was a lot of focus on Ron DeSantis as his replacement for the purposes of making Five Minute Hate threads about anything and everything that was happening in Florida politics as evidence of the next step of the fascist Gamergate plot. And people were posting that gif in all of them.

Eventually some prominent members from Florida complained about how this was heartless and insensitive to the marginalized members in Florida who couldn't escape the camps, especially trans members who were headed to the camps.

It became a moot point because Trump started running again and then we had the new genocide and so on. Now prominent members say stuff like how Ron DeSantis is just some irrelevant nobody ignoring the whole year they spent whipping themselves into a frenzy about how he was Trump 2.0 and an even bigger Nazi to the point that the forum staff had to ban a gif.

edit: Also, that thread is the only result from a promised major rewrite of the rules by Nepenthe and Hecht. Nepenthe would later post that it somewhat stalled out because it was taking so much effort to track down all the rules the staff had issued in random threads and never actually added to the rules pages. Which themselves have only been updated once in all the years since, to remove the ban on comparing Israel to Nazis. That thread was supposed to be the place to find all rules changes going forward.

Iirc it was during a time where new legislations in Florida kept making the news and people would then respond to those threads with the gif. In typical Resetera fashion this upset some people because they were like "well I'm gay and I live in Florida, you want me gone forever too???"
