Every day I watch google's ai overview rot the brains of my students even more. Kids don't even click wikipedia anymore, let alone any other links. They get an assignment, immediately google the questions, and then just copy or paraphrase whatever the ai overview tells them.

Now every big game is $250m GaaS and a not insignificant amount of them bomba and get delisted in a month

 

It's kind of a self fulfilling prophecy.

These things blew up during COVID in a good way because of the lockdowns so they were greenlit and took about 5 - 6 years to actually build and ship. Economically this only makes sense if enough content can be provided so team sizes have increased to support these games. 

Liberal governments unsure what the economy post COVID and pre-AI would look like decided to invest heavily in gaming as that was "booming" and resillient, bigger employment opportunities meant more subsidies, tax breaks and other incentives for these companies to grow and expand. Other opportunies such as corporate software at that point didn't show as much growth as the gaming industry had. Overall there wasn't much else to invest in.

So the CFO's went to work. 4 seperate $20 million games with a 10% margin, that's only $8 million. A single $100 million MMO that makes $50 million or $100 million is a much bigger return even if there are costs to sustain, which of course will be funded by income from DLC's and expansions as well as tax breaks and government grants. It's a no brainer to focus on those type of projects back in 2021 - 2023.

But it all went tits up. Liberal governments got voted out or had to set different priorities sometimes before those incentives could materialize. Venture capital moved on to something more exciting and possibly even more profitable than gaming: AI. After COVID the way people spend their time did change but not in favor of gaming but rather social media. And the games themselves? Well, more pressure to release them in a beta state as the sinkhole becomes deeper with each month of development. The goal being to drop the game, earn money and reinvest that money to improve the game. But gaming audiences have moved on from half baked beta releases and early access. So now we're seeing more "write offs" of games already in development that they won't even ship (or announce). 

Now we're in limbo. AI is not yet at the level where you can build these type of complex projects with it. But the gaming industry like every other industry is bleeding talent as the most talented engineers are offered jobs in AI. Same as what happened when corporate software boomed in the Xbox One / PS4 era. Hardware both consoles and servers are facing the issue with shortages and rising costs thanks to the AI boom. Which either needs to be deducted from the already low margins or put on the tab of the consumer which is already spending less on gaming.

Every AAAA game that ships in 2030 needs to have been greenlit already or in some type of prototype phase. Hell a lot of games greenlit over 5 years ago like GTA6 and Fable have yet to ship. And no one can actually tell when AI will be able to meaningfully contribute to game development.

It's extra funny when it feels so obvious that it's a bad idea like that new Horizon game. It really makes you wonder what the devs themselves are thinking. Am I somehow more in tune than they are or do they also think this is a bullshit idea? Sure, there is a possibility it's a huge success and I eat crow, but the chance for that happening seems quite similar to winning the lottery.

The USAID cuts are very symbolic of the moral rot and idiocy that's taken over America. The concept of charity and helping the needy is seen as some grand moral sin by a solid half of the country.

There's also an irony in the "America first" crowd failing to understand the entire concept of soft power. The US flexing its overwhelming wealth and power for good is benefiting the nation and its reputation abroad. Offering a helping hand to developing countries pays dividends in the long run as those countries develop and relationships are formed. It's a win-win for everyone, and just about the most ethical way for the US to have its hands in global affairs.

I can't tell whether this whole thing is more stupid than it is evil. The fact that DOGE was in charge of this tells me they didn't have a clue what USAID even did.

Now people are dying? People have been dying by the hundreds of thousands already. It's been pretty well known.

People were dying with the establishment of USAID on two fronts.

First is that the metrics that determined the distribution of food aid would incentivize countries to stop growing their own food in order to receive the cheap grain available, while other markets who genuinely needed that grain were left out and thus experienced caloric shortages. Second is that the marketing surrounding USAID where countries were displayed as backwards, war-torn hotspots of famine decimated some countries' tourism sectors as well as their foreign investment potential. Both led to tens to hundreds of thousands of deaths every year, depending upon the surrounding political and climate conditions that may have been exacerbated by the so-called aid.

From where I'm standing, most people don't actually care about the plight, safety, and autonomy of Africans nor about the root causes of the continent's destitution, which is deliberate Western underdevelopment and capitalistic encirclement after the abolition of slavery, economic warfare by institutions like the IMF and World Bank, and continued exploitation of their natural resources through aggressive extraction and foreign exacerbation of needless conflicts such as what Rwanda is doing to the DRC right at this moment.

Africans are totally free to die unnecessarily, just in manners you can't see, or ones that benefit Westerners in terms of what products they can buy, and only by the hands of your political allies. Then it's silence. I am not moved by the outage here. Where was it before for my people? And where will it be once Trump is gone?

Africa as a whole must fundamentally be liberated from an economic and political system that was, from the start, built on the dehumanization of the African in order to benefit white settler. That's all there is to it.

If you actually care about gameplay, the PS2/GCN/XB gen was wildly superior to ps3/360

I don't necessarily agree with this, but one advantage that generation had over all of them that came after is that a team of like 15-25 people could turn around a game in a single year. And the publishers could make often a profit off of it.

Look, for example, at the Tony Hawk games. Single player, multiplayer (even in 3/4 before the platforms had it), completely new maps, graphics competitive with most everything else, etc. Vice City was also done in a single year. 

Look at a company like Pandemic and their release list over just four years:

By the next generation this was no longer feasible. Teams had to at least double and now take at least two years for a single game. Nobody could release a game every year anymore, let alone two like Pandemic was doing. Now teams twice that size can spend seven years and millions and not even make a game just a single vertical slice. Naughty Dog now has like 400 or more people and Intergalactic has no release date, it's already been in development for six years and they've only released remakes/remasters over that time.
