I am just going by what Phil Spencer said in 2024. These franchises aren't growing and so they are making them available in more places. Right now it's more or less the same people who played previous games are buying this one, but of course there are new players too, as well as new people will come in on other platforms.

I saw the CCU was higher than it was for Forza Horizon 5, which in a way makes sense, there are more people who are exposed to the franchise now, and my statement was about how exposing this franchise to more people will help it grow, which was exactly what Phil Spencer said they wanted to do.

Rachel Barker (no relation to Curry Barker haha, director of Obsession), explores this archetype of the loser incel villain and its evolution from killer (Peeping Tom, Halloween) to 90s manosphere revered characters (Fight Club, American Psycho), and now more down-to-earth "nice guy" sympathetic loner/loser misogynists with entitlement complexes (Companion, Better Watch Out, Blink Twice, Don't Worry Darling, Adolescence, and now Obsession).

I think it's about how middle class white men felt as the aggrieved in a patriarchal, capitalist system that left them behind and how they take it out on women (offline and online) rather than the social and economic structures no longer having them be dominant.

The writer of that review posts here, so I think it's kind of shit to keep personally insulting them. That review was supposed to be for Paste Games before it closed and instead it found a home on Kotaku. I assume if that same review word-for-word landed on Paste, people would not be going "lmao Paste Games is not worth reading." They also don't work for Kotaku, it is a freelance review.

Also, like, my wife is a senior reporter at Kotaku, so yeah, I'm going to see those "The whole publication is garbage!" comments as the bullshit that it is.

I'm not going to lie, the past couple of days after the announcement of Yujiro Hanma for Tekken has been really getting me thinking about women and fighting games.

For all the frustration with ERA, the discourse here has been positively great compared to places like Reddit (the front of r/Fighters is really bad right now) where it's been depressing seeing fans on mass mock fans uncomfortable with a rapist being in the game, from whataboutisms, shaming or going "But Marduk "" (FYI and I actually made an entire thread about this years back, yeah and I HATE Marduk, I hate they wrote a scene in Tekken 5 where they imply he rapes Anna, I will NEVER get why they flanderized him so much in Tekken 5 to the point he's going around bragging about murdering Armour King and doing shit like that, shit that he never did before or since and honestly makes Armour King 2 COMPLETELY justified in hating him and King for befriending him, I don't like seeing him because I don't want him to ruin one of my favourite video games series); I don't even want to think what the reactions are like on plays like Twitter or fighting game forums and places like Eventhubs...

And it's hard for me not to think fighting game, both the companies and fandom treat women, both real and fictional as secondary, of lesser importance.

Like with the last season of DLC for Street Fighter, it's hard not to notice that Viper and Ingrid got WAY less marketing and push from Capcom then Sagat and Alex and got way less attention and push by the fighting game community of YouTube, especially Alex (I still don't get why Alex in particular was pushed so hard). Same with the base game with Luke, seem to always get pushed more then women; the only real exception to that is Mai and that's because she's a guest star and well incredibly sexualized which yeah I'm sorry I'm not going to forget how the YouTube scene went full horny weird with her.

Hell same is true with Smash, besides with Inkling, if a character can be a man or a woman, the man will ALWAYS be the default and the one most likely to be the one to only get a Amiibo, especially noticeable with Fire Emblem characters like Byleth where the woman is the more popular one yet still treated as secondary and sidelined in Smash's. And bringing up Mai again, it honestly should be an embarrassment that Mai got barred from the game for being too sexualized, that despite being SNK's most important and well-known woman, she still wasn't considered important enough to include in any form, not worth the effort, something I seriously doubt they'd pull if their were say an issue with Terry Bogard; and honestly they way that got treated both by Sakurai response (and yes I am aware the "good girls and boys" line was a dub addition (which is not a great look on the dubbing team) but what he actually said was all that great either) and the fan response which was to make a joke of it and something to be proud of.

Hell even with MK which is better with this in many regards, the DLC, especially the guest stars are always men dominated. Marvel Tokon has surprised with Storm and Ms Marvel getting a lot of focus so I'll give them that.

And yeah it's hard not to notice with DLC, when women DO get focused, it's nearly always for the sexualized costumes like last year and SF's summer skins bikini skins (because the only option for summer wear in fighting games for women is bikini, never anything else).

Women rarely make at least half the roster unless it's games like DOA or SNK Heroines where the main appeal is to titillate men. Women will always be the most likely to be replaced when there deemed to "old" to be playable, the ones most sexualized, the get the most fan hatred (see Lucky Chloe) etc etc. It really does feel like in the eyes of Capcom, Bandai, SNK and even Nintendo, women, both women fans and women characters secondary, we might get crumbs or the bone thrown like Marisa (and even then it feels Capcom has slowly defocused on her), but it's clear that in the eyes of these companies and the online fighting game fandom (note I'm saying online, I don't know what the actual in-person tournament scene is like now), women are guests in the fandom and will never been the focus.

Like I'm not saying women can't like these characters, I love Morrigan from DarkStalkers, but it's pretty clear Morrigan is not a character where the appeal to women is a priority, especially in recent years. Same with Anna. Same with Cammy. Same with Mileena (side note, it still pisses me off she was killed off in the first reboot MK movie, don't know if she's in the sequel, haven't seen it yet).

And don't think that fandom would accept change, I don't think these companies will ever want to change or make fighters that appeal to women first and if my dream game did existing a wlw/lesbian fighting game made for and women would get treated with scorn for not appealing to men.

And even with all that, I just personally feel so at odd with the online fighting game fanbase, like I don't see a character like Yujiro, even if wasn't a serial rapist as the most hyped character ever, same with Alex with SF.

 
 
 
 

I disagree with absolutely none of this except for one small detail, and that's Ingrid's marketing push from SF. They pushed her much harder than Sagat and Viper, I would say almost to the same level of Alex. Mostly because the director of SF is a huge, well-known, outspoken Ingrid fanboy.

I think Ingrid's reception amongst everyone who isn't a chud has been insanely positive, and the old guard FGC heads who said she would ruin the game and she's the worst character ever all look spectacularly foolish, because (except for the tawdry outfit 3) they absolutely killed it with her. Seeing 40 something men excited to play as Capcoms Sailor Moon warms the heart. So to your point about them accepting change, I do think the newer gens (and even the older gens) will gladly take a well-developed and constructed character even if they're outside their "comfort zone." For the most part. There's always the screeching few, I suppose.
