It's funny that they got a Final Fantasy completely without any pandering designs, an effect of the more grounded tone, and yet they keep on bitching.

Literally never enough for them. These types will always find something to scream about.

Case in point, still screaming about a superhero movie featuring a minority NB/Trans main character:

Some of you just love to hate on DC. Get over it. Seriously. It’s old. It’s tired. It’s not amusing. I hate being made to feel like shit for liking a DC movie. Ezra Miller aside, this was a really fun movie that had me grinning from beginning to end and really struck an emotional chord with me.

Like who actually actively roots for a movie to fail? Some of you guys need to get over yourselves.

Wonder why none of them talk about/reference the JK Rowling podcast series... almost as if it invalidates all of their whining...

They (and Pink News et al) did start taking quotes out of context for a couple of episodes, but I think there was some blowback because they stopped reporting on it at all. The one where she said it was a mistake to make a big thing about deplatforming Milo Yiannopoulos was spun as her supporting him.

Her quote:

Quote:I thought it was a terrible strategic error. My feeling was, you are giving this man way more power than he deserves by behaving in this way. It made Milo look sexier and edgier than he deserved to look.

I thought it was strategically appalling. Get on that platform and eviscerate his ideas, get on that platform and expose him for the charlatan that he is. You push back hard. You've given him so much power by refusing to talk. In fact, they were serving his purposes because he was able to walk away from that saying. 'Look, they don't dare debate me, this is how dangerous and edgy I am.' And I don't think we want to cast the alt-right in that light.

Their reaction starts here.

I enjoyed the podcast because she basically says they've been making shit up about what she's said and done ever since her only sin was a couple of liked tweets.

What are these JK podcasts people speak of? Wouldn’t mind hearing it from the horses mouth

Anyway.

I watched a black YouTuber talk about this article when it first came out, and he mentioned that he really didn't like the fuss involved with it. The argument he made was that the actual inspiration and design for the world comes from white stories/white history/white culture. Even though it's being made by japanese people, it's very clear that this world is being inspired by white culture and white stories. So to him, of course predominantly white. He would not expect a significant amount of black people to take front stage in a story inspired from white culture. In the same way he believes white people should take a back seat in black stories/mythologies/history. You wouldn't expect to see a ton of white people in the movie Coco. You wouldn't see Asian people play a large role in a movie like Moana. Soul, a movie about jazz, wouldn't quite hit the same way it should with a large white cast. He argues that the medievil Europe setting is clearly inspired by white tales, white history, and white culture. So in the same way that soul wouldn't quite hit the same with a white cast, so too is final fantasy xvi a white culture inspired game. He also doesn't think it really matters that japanese people are making a white culture game, in the same way that a large staff of white people made ghost of tsushima. Despite not being of the race that story comes from, they showed respect to the stories and culture they drew from. For example... There aren't a load of white people hanging out in ghost of tsushima.

Initially I was going to argue that point, but then he proactively answered my argument.

He said something to the effect of that the counterargument would be that whiteness is the default, and too many stories are white led that have no reason to be, and he conceded that point, but he still held is ground that medieval europe inspired tales are white culture in the same way that the movie soul tapped into an aspect of black culture. It's true that there is really nothing stopping square from adding in more black/poc characters in the game. Just like Soul could've had more diversity as well. But at the end of the day, soul is a movie directly inspired by black culture and stories, just like ghost of tsushima was for japanese people, just like final fantasy xvi was for white people.

And.. Honestly the argument makes sense to me.

Lots of angry replies to that post on the next page, especially from Slaythe.

Now, I say this as non-white person myself...

If black people are so angry that fantasy videogames don't contain black characters... then why don't a bunch of black game developers come together and make a black fantasy game themselves?

Indeed, why don't black Reeeeeseters make their own game?

Seriously. Why are they always complaining that a Japanese videogame developer, who spends millions of dollars on developing their games and want to maximise their sales and revenue as simply and efficiently as possible, aren't filling their games with black people?

Maybe it's because... the average, non-forum dwelling casual black videogame player is a normal individual and doesn't give a fuck about any of this stuff and just wants to chill out for a few hours and escape, before returning to the real world?

And for what it's worth, and someone mentioned this earlier, none of the Final Fantasy games have anything approaching your typical white characters. They all look like k-pop and j-pop idols.

Lots of the responses also say that it's a fantasy world not an historically accurate game, but that just feels incredibly hollow when they were so mad that Kingdom Come Deliverance wasn't diverse despite taking place in some backwater village in Bohemia.
And despite not being any kind of historically accurate game, it's very clear that the game got it's inspiration from things like Game of Thrones which in turn got its inspiration from the real life War of the Roses. So yeah, you can make an argument that this is based in white culture despite fucking fireballs and dragons. Just like Dragon Ball is still based on the Asian tale "Journey to the West".
If you were to make the same kind of game in African setting they'd be proper pissed if it was suddenly filled with white dudes. Anyone trying to excuse it with "Yeah but Africa had trade relations with europe" would get banned.

I don't get why you want your 'team' to have any part in this story anyway. It's like when they insist that Netflix adds some diversity to the SS battalions.

some commentary from Falcs at icon-era:

Falcs wrote:I signed up at Gaf sometime around 2011. Then I followed the crowd over to ResetEra after the drama of 2017, not really knowing what had happened. I soon realised everything I hated about Gaf had actually gone to ResetEra, so I went back to Gaf and found it was better than ever.
Then Evilore lost his mind after Jan 6 and banned all his loyal members who had stuck by him and supported him during and after the 2017 exodus.

This ultimately lead to the creation of dpad.life by the community of banned members. I was there from day one on this one. The site had a lot of promise and potential, but unfortunately the mods at dpad now treat their members like children, causing several members and many of the most active contributors to leave.

And so now here I am here.
