How do we get away from this?

Cogent analysis of art like films would require some basic level of media and cultural literacy- understanding the identity and intent of the director, the social and political base assumptions the film is working on, when and where the film takes place, and a willingness to play with metaphor.

It requires reading, curiosity, and empathy......

So yeah, we probably don't fix it! 🙃

this really pisses me off because even as dumb as cinemasins is, a lot of people in that "scene" who evolved past him are the reason the public are finally waking up to the fact that everything is great about modern media except the writing (the most important part)

these channels have gotten people more used to watching movies critically and noticing shit they used to let slide, and spreading the word when films aren't very good

I have a friend who is, by his own admission, an uncritical consumer, someone who watches all movies as "popcorn movies" and lets everything wash over him, and even he has been getting pissed at stuff like Rise of Skywalker and Rings of Power...he doesn't even watch any film criticism but the sheer badness is breaking through to him anyway

I'm calling shenanigans on the marketing spend claims on that chart that Disney randomly decided to go lower than their usual marketing spend on The Little Mermaid and WAY lower than usual on Indiana Jones & The Tired Franchise and The Marvels.

Seems like copium that the two mega bombas just didn't get the marketing push they needed.
There is no fucking way they pushed The Marvels about the same as they pushed Quantumania. They were fucking hyping it.

What I'd actually like addressed though is the fact that Threads doesn't actually give any shits about toxic hate comments. They're still there just fine, I've tried reporting straight-up vermin rhetoric, harassing people as ugly, fat, transphobic slurs, pedophiles harassing women, even spamming 18-y/o thirst threads onto post criticizing men targeting young women. All my reports have no action taken - actually just checking there is one that came back, an account with the f-slur in its name that does nothing but post replies about trans people and muslims in the most putrid terms - "we found nothing against our hate speech policy".

I still attest that Threads in its current form is a more positive community than current Twitter.... but if Twitter loses its foothold, they're all coming (and already are) to Threads to get the toxic engagement they want harassing women & minorities and Threads does not at all mind that.

I’ve seen stories about over using VFX because they don’t worry about unions or whatever. But that’s supposed to save money.

Where does the money go. To pick on captain marvel 2, as far as I can tell, it doesn’t have any high profile talent to drive the cost up. Even if somehow Brie was getting Robert Downey Jr money, like $25 million, that’s still $250 million unaccounted for.

Hmm no I don't think so. I know it was banned here, but I did follow discussions and streams of it elsewhere. My overall impression was that it was a highly polished but very forgettable game. This was largely due to it not really delivering on the fantasy of being a student at Hogwarts. Instead it opted to be a generic open world game where you run around outside Hogwarts, murdering goblins and such. But I'm not surprised about it being on this list, it did sell an insane amount of copies.

Which is why it didn't drop like a rock from public consciousness like you said.

Obviously it wasn't a 90+ state-of-the-art game, and ended up being a little bit generic like you said, but it is the best game in decades of one of the biggest IPs in the world. That's not questionable.

Starfield is mid af right now but it also has a whole lot in common with both No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk, both of which (after years of updates) completely turned around and became genuinely really great. So I don't think it's true that Starfield is an unsalvageable game. The question though is whether BGS is actually going to support it long enough and do the hard work necessary to actually patch it into a good game

Didn’t Bethesda also recently release a massive patch improving performance and stability among other things to Starfield? Games got a ton of issues, but so far, they seem to be supporting it.

Don’t get me wrong, I doubt Starfield even remotely has the legs of Skyrim for a lot of reasons. At least for right now though, they seem to be working on it. This time next year though? That might be dicey.

It’s not a bad game, but as someone here said (might have been you even) the setting and atmosphere, though original, is not very interesting after you spend a bunch of time with it. Ultimately it need a different storyline than multiverse of Todd.

And there is still something there to work with now that we know there are parallel universes in the game, they just needed to make those more common in New Game+.
