The Xbox brand was simple, play HALO and Dead or Alive, drink some beers and teabag your opponents. It was edgy and cool. In fact it was such a bro-machine that kids with small hands couldn't even hold the original controllers. In the 360 era that continued, from sci-fi sex in Mass Effect to a sea of shooters with gore and guts and an online service that was much better than what PlayStation or Nintendo offered.

Now they focus on the rainbow shit and accessible controllers and they've nearly killed all the big Xbox IP's the latest being Forza. Gen-Z thinks Xbox is lame, millenials think Xbox is too corpo and gen-x hates all the subscription/micro transaction bullshit and rather plays Dad of War on PlayStation. PC gamers that want a console on the side, well they can play nearly every game on PC now and for a console-like experience they can get the Steamdeck.

So the remaining audience for Xbox is folks who jumped in because it was the cheapest with Series S + GamePass. People that accidentally use the GamePass apps on Samsung TV's and Windows 11, kids that wanted the PS5 that couldn't find it or their parents bought the wrong machine or gamers like myself who entered the Xbox ecosystem somewhere along the way and want to keep playing the games that they already own.

The big new thing is AI, so Phil Spender is no longer offering his boss the most promising or exciting opportunities. I wonder if this was Nadella's plan all along, allow the Xbox team to take over all these studios to ensure Xbox would be big enough as a third party publisher. I don't think he ever intended to play a console war rematch with Sony and Nintendo.

They flat out admitted that they've lost the console war. Switch is utterly dominant and PS5 is outselling SX/SS by an embarrassing margin. It's only a matter of time before they go fully third party and make Game Pass their flagship product on other platforms like EA does with their EA Play subscription.

The sheer amount of damage to their brand that Kinect and Xbone caused can't be overstated. They used to be the go to for western games, Halo was a cultural phenomenon and Gears of War was basically the ultimate dudebro game. That was their bread and butter for about a decade, but then they started trying to court the Wii crowd and positioned Xbox One as a multimedia device rather than a game console and all that goodwill got shot out the airlock. Nowadays their brand is an unidentifiable mush, they have no flagships or any real identity other than being the cheapest option. All of their old franchises have been withered away by increasingly mediocre sequels and nothing they've made lately has stuck. Their only ace in the hole now is buying up other studios but if Bethesda is any indication then that's not going to work out for them either.

Reclaiming your period was a big part of early feminism, and it carries on to this day. Across multiple cultures and religions, women on their period are hugely stigmatised as being "dirty", "foul", and "tainted" to this day. Elevating your period to something more than just "piss and shit" was, and is, absolutely a real thing by woman of all stripes to this day. It's something that very strong, pro-trans feminists I know still believe in.

If a woman views her period in that way then more power to her - we shouldn't be jumping down someone's throat because of that. It's when they use that view to exclude women who don't have periods that there is a problem.

If I recall correctly the Xbox 360 Kinect actually sold quite well, it just completely tanked with the hardcore gamers. The biggest mistake was then to make it mandatory for the Xbox one which drove the price up. Casual gamers weren't interested in paying that much for their dancing game and hardcore gamers still hated the gimmick

I still see kinect as a necessary step in a lot of improved tech we still make use of today, from what I understand its underlying methodology is still being used for various medical purposes

wii remote popularizes digital motion tracking -> sony and ms say "oh shit we gotta copy that" -> explosion in gyro research, still a part of every smartphone -> body tracking becomes commercially viable, used in virtual reality -> kinect tech licensed for medical and science use, continued adoption -> ????
