Uh no. The US military isn't far off from a 9 to 5 job when stateside especially for a "softer" branch like the Air Force. Clock in, don't fail a drug test, clock out. 

While generally conservative, there's still people from all walks of life that believe all sorts of things. Medical, technology, and various office jobs will all skew away from the right-wing nationalist stereotype, yeah and maybe even a few hardcore leftwing types as well.

I would like to know if their level of japanese rises beyond machine translations anyway. I even doubt these types even took japanese lessons once in their lives.

There is backlash for localizations in general due to the cringe narrative that localizers are taking too many liberties with translations so make sure if you like a translation you make it known on social media or elsewhere.

The truth is a bitter aging minority is upset that Japanese games appeal to a larger market than ever and that the quality of localizations into English are now refined to reflect that. This crowd prefers the English to be broken and incoherent like a PS1 game translated by a Japanese man named Dave Suzuki who spent 1 year in Australia on a working holiday.

Unless you are a big Japanese developer, seem that people are being more muted about their excitement of Japanese games. The excitement of PS2/PS3 era Atlus/NiSA/Akys is dead. Some Japanese retro releases don’t bother with Translations. Mainstream gaming press don’t even bother to cover games that would have been holy grails of Japanese games years ago.

I agree that direct translations are not good… but is also shit to pretend that people have no reasons to be wary or that localizers (ugh) are above reproach. We just had a big shit show of some volunteers localizers trying to “fix” a anime they outright disliked. 

(There also clear behind scenes drama in the translation/localization community, so I’m wary of both sides arguments and intentions)

I also particularly like the "the localizers clearly think they're better writers than the originals" dig. Like... yeah. It's their job to be lol. The original team wrote a Japanese script for a Japanese audience and I'm sure they did a great job. The whole point of localizers is to be better than them at writing an English script for an English audience. They're different skill set

   

There's no localization cabal out there secretly planning on Japanese games into something they aren't. We all got into the business cause we love these games, we grew up with them, and want to make sure the kids coming up after can too.

And above you have a dude saying they are better writers than the OG creators in a different language. I get what he tried to say but is kind of dishonest to say “I’m better writer in English” like every single translation was not using OG script as basis.

I do videogame localization for a living and I have to say that a good localization is, more often than not, WAY better than direct translation.

Sure, it may lose some details or change some aspects of it, but it could also make it way, way more appealing in a different language, which is exactly the point.

Of course, it entirely depends on the context and how important being faithful to the original text is. We'd have to look at each specific work to determine what's better. But generally? Localization is the best choice.

If you want to experience the game in its pure, unadulterated original form... just learn Japanese, I guess?

I'm just curious if there are any games that sound the way the english script of that game does, but in japanese

like if you took the english script there and did a direct translation into japanese, would they think you're insane, do they simply never talk/write that way

They probably get the approval from a random exec that most probably doesn’t speak English. I almost bet you is a “Trust me, bro” between both localizers and Japanese companies. So yeah, saying “but the studio is okay with it” is not saying a lot. And it goes both ways. Not localization example but I remember how Ghost of Tsushima had incredible broken Japanese Kanji, even if it was successful in Japan is still kind of telling a Japanese conglomerate didn’t catch this when making the game.

I think is a little foolish to try to do a Vagrant Story localization in this day and age, and I feel it was a pretty happy accident from an era where translations were gaining more effort than random English dude for accounting. Is not impossible to have a Japanese video game that tries two appeal to both audiences even in writing, Final Fantasy XVI is a weird but successful example of the localization line getting blurred. But that are conscious efforts from both branches, something that not every Japanese studio can afford outside the AAA sphere.

I’m glad Matsuno is happy with Vagrant Story and Tactics localization, but dunno if that could work for every video game and I doubt Vanillaware has any input beyond “yeah, sure”.
