I tend to gravitate towards the death penalty for serious and proven crimes like homicide, sexual assault, and pedophilia. It's not about it being a deterrent either, I believe it's the right thing to do when someone has this much disregard for human life and dignity.

Other crimes, I go back and forth. The thing is I'm not a fan of prison, and I haven't (yet) to hear a successful and verifiable prison system any where in the world. Community service is the closest thing I can think of and even that has its issues.

I work in the prison system. You do understand that the majority of people who harm others sexually (rape, sexual assault, etc) have sexual trauma of their own, usually as children? Your inclination is to KILL them instead of treat them? And that somehow reflects your value of having a high regard for human life?

The world is full of people that experience abuse and don't sexualy assult, murder or mess with kids.. Give me a break.
We all have our crosses to bear. I'm for rehabilitative justice and the biggest part of that is getting perpetrators to accept responsibility. If you give them an excuse they will happily take it and reoffend. Why not? Not their fault.

Most bad guys have poor impulse control. They want something and don't have the money, they take it. Someone calls them a bitch they punch them. You need to separate them from the psychopaths and schizophrenic types. Mental hospitals won't take them if they are violent so we get stuck with them. Those people need more help than we can give, sadly. And I don't even know how we "cure" them. We give them their meds but it's way too easy for them to fool the nurses. That's the reason we have different security levels. We put the normies in the lower level and the ones that can't get along with others in the higher levels. We have prisons within prisons.

I don't even know why anyone would try and have a discussion about a complex issue like this over forum posts. I could yammer all day and not even hit the tip of the "criminal justice system" iceberg.
