Way back when I was a teenager, I was at a summer camp where we were learning about leadership. Specifically, we learned about Fish! Philosophy. Created in Seattle's Pike Place Market, Fish! Philosophy is based on 4 core principles of improving morale and building a team. The 4 values are:

Choose your attitude
Now, we can go back and forth all day long on the validity of corporate leadership dogma. But the idea that attitude is a choice is something that's really stuck with me ever since. And something other people in my life have pushed back on.

I'm not saying it doesn't take work, but I really do believe that a person can choose their attitude towards a situation. I try to be a positive person and look for the silver-lining in a given circumstance, and I get pretty burnt out when exposed to excess negativity. I've been told by people they can't help it, their natural response to something is what it is. I personally disagree with this, but I've been told it by enough people that I feel it merits discussion

Lots of good points raised that "choice" is not a good term to use in this context. But rather skill that is practiced in how we respond to circumstance. If you think of attitude as your internal feeling in response to something, then no, there might not be much you can do to control/choose that. If you think of it as the external response given to a circumstance, then that is something I believe can be practiced and controlled. I apologize for my crude oversimplification of the topic.

The usual suspects say emotions are not under one's control. "It's not my fault if I yell at my mom over cold tendies!!"

Of course corporate loves this kind of speak where people need to maintain a positive attitude in a toxic environment.
