I don't know a goddamn thing about One Piece the Manga/Anime read the manga in shonen jump when they started bringing it out in the US in the very late 90's iirc, only read a few chapters but don't remember much about it so I don't know if it butchered any characterizations or whatever. 
Enjoyed the netflix live action for what it is, it's not perfect some hokey fight choreography and the main cast acting ranges from mediocre to godawful but in terms of a live action adaptation it's top tier, none the less if you want to watch an entertaining adventure show you can definitely do way worse, I whole heartedly recommend it.
