Back to the Future is strangely, but rightfully, really popular in Japan. And I think part of it is how the sequel presents a future Japan extrapolated from the 1980s dominance. That’s true for a lot of cyberpunk or 1980s and 90s visions of the future. Back then you could have a Japanese corporation making robot ninja that were superior to Robocop. Robo still wins because of American grit and a jet pack.
