For a beginner, free weights and the fundamentals are the way to go.
But I’ll say, for about two months I’ve mostly been using machines and it’s made a notable difference in strength and leaning out. Specifically machines that use plates and have the lever to help start deeper. Reckon it’s psychological, because you can push until you physically can’t without worrying about injury. At the same time, I like knowing something could go wrong. Horizontal leg presses suck but when there’s the fear you’ll be crushed in the 45 degree ones, it’s nice.
