Wow, I never really re-read that thread where Shoot was like "fire the teacher, stab the infidels, whatever", but B-Dubs has an absolute banger right at the beginning.

The issue here is the line the university is taking doesn't track with groups like CAIR, Muslim professors, and professors of Islamic art. Like, we absolutely need to be sensitive to people faiths and beliefs, but part of educating people is also challenging those beliefs and broadening those horizons.

So, I'll also note, there's an OPed in the Journal of Higher Ed in which a Muslim professor takes offense to the university's choice here as according to her it flattens out Muslim beliefs and paints everyone of Islamic faith with a single brush. I won't link to the article simply because it features the painting itself as the image that goes along with it.

This university is completely out of step with mainstream, contemporary Islamic thought. Many Islamic organizations oppose the firing of this teacher. There's even an article from a Muslim professor that lays this all out.

...now, I won't link the article, because I don't want a fatwa declared on the admins of resetera, but the point remains: the university is making an unfair generalization about the modern adherents of Islam!
