Looked up some car prices today for shits and giggles after reading so much doom and gloom about cars being out of reach for the average worker and I was shocked.
Small used cars that barely break 80hp cost up to €10k. Anything below €10k is basically junk. 
Used cars with equal performance as my 2014 Lancer (~150hp) start at €20k or more. 
 
Thankfully the mileage of my Lancer is just ~70k miles and these things are known to run up to 300k miles if not more.
They don't make cars like these anymore.

recently had the exact same experience as you, just change to dollars (below $10k is junk)

managed to get a good 10 year old car for $15k though
