What's really being expressed is that you need to invest $35 in a meal to have that meal exist, and if you can go out and pay $12 for a sandwich instead, with no effort and guaranteed no wasted ingredients for you, that makes more sense. The bonus in leftover ingredients comes from a valid state of mind surrounding deprivation, investment, and risk.
If you're privileged enough that you don't need to consider all that, I can see how that would rub people the wrong way.
