For example, Joe Biden lead from 2017 on until after the Iowa caucuses. Mitt Romney basically did the same from 2009 on, with Newt always in the mix. Hillary led in both her runs and nearly won in 2008. John Kerry was always a leading candidate in 2004. Trump is the exception because nobody even polled on him until 2015, Obama was similar and was regularly a leading candidate when they did start polling with him.
