This is a rollercoaster 

Not to go all Era, but Ivan’s approach is a classic “neg”, for those of us old enough to remember 00s era pick up artist language.

Like he was (and perhaps is??) definitely trying to smash and is 0% interested in her actual academic work.

Not that he needs to be raked over coals, but the strategy is obvious to those who *eyes quickly dart back and forth* Know the Signs.
