Same, I mentioned in the OP but one of the ships I follow and see regularly is Aerith x Tifa, a ship that has 0% happening, but many wlw still love regardless, for me it's ultimately wish fulfilment and where on the wlw side, lesbian and wlw women can show off what they'd love to see, hope to see and what type of romances they'd want. Though of course, you should say never say never because as a child I would never have believed that Velma and Arcee would come out as lesbians and they have, in part because of fans eventually becoming creatives in those works (So still hoping one day Street Fighter's Cammy comes out as a lesbian).

One thing I have noticed despite not engaging in most online shipping discussion that choice-based games often end up creating more debate, frustration and toxicity, either fans fan warring on which romance is the best/more "canon" or if the games end up making one romance more "legitimate" then the others. We saw a bad case of this last year with Life is Strange which I felt ended being even more vitriolic because of how important the first game was for many wlw gamers (and I admit that one stung me a bit as well). I feel that's a bit of a result of how a lot of VG wlw romances are choice based and not fixed canon ones, especially in the AAA space where outside of characters like Ellie and Aloy, I'm genuinely struggling of wlw characters that are fully out there and not just implied (subtle or VERY heavily like Pearl and Marina; and recently with SF6 with Marisa and Manon) or optional choice romances in RPGs. It's why I think V x Caitlyn has became such an important thing for a lot of wlw people I feel.
