The #MutualAid Housewives of Bluesky County
The reality is that they don't pass, far from it. So going out of house in their neck of the woods probably means being stared down constantly, pointed at, laughed at, or worse. It's like the bullied kid who's terrified of going to school in the morning. I can understand how this stress and anxiety could be debilitating. But unlike the bullied kid, their situation is in large part self-inflicted. What good is being your "true self" if it means cutting yourself off from society? It's supposed to be the opposite.
