It's "controversial" because people read that 6 word description in the thread title and assumed it was literally just that, instead of actually reading the fucking patent. So we keep spreading objective misinformation.

I suspect they're "looking into it" because the government is run by terminally online weirdos part of a movement born from a terminally online gaming weirdo fiasco, and are trying to court gamers with performative nonsense.

Very cute to read these posts as , especially considering you criticize people for "not reading" while skipping the part that says that the initial granting of the patent was widely criticized by actual IP lawyers

Also Trump has nominated a lot of idiots but in this case the only thing I can find is the Director is well respected in the IP community. So most likely there is some issues behind the patent for him to personally get involved.

You mean like Gene Park (aka not actually an IP lawyer) and Florian Mueller (whose own take has been criticized by other lawyers for being an inaccurate summation of the actual scope and contents of the patent)?

Right, right. I def haven't read anything about this. But I'm sure you have! I'm sure you know exactly who made what claims, and why. And that's why you're so convinced as to their veracity. Just like everyone else here. 🙄

It wasn't though. Gamers tossed the barebones descriptions at random lawyers on Twitter and nabbed a few "I haven't read the patent, but it sounds pretty bad" quotes shortened down to the back half.

Care to be more specific? Are you referring to Florian Mueller (whose own takes have been criticized by other laywyers), or perhaps Gene Park (who isn't an IP lawyer)? Because those are the two primary sources behind the general public's understanding re: the scope and contents of these patents.

I'll bring up Haley MacLean's (who is a working video game IP lawyer) video from when this was approved. I'm not a lawyer, but since she is I'd defer to her judgement and she succinctly shows why this was bad.

The IGN article names Florian Mueller, Kirk Sigmon, Don McGowan and the japanese patent office.
