Dr. Dawn Michael pursued a diverse academic path that blended communication, therapy, human sexuality, healing and health. While studying, she immersed herself in her family business as an interior designer and licensed contractor, channeling her creativity into innovative "couples' interior design" concepts that extended to intimate bedroom spaces.At age 40, driven by a passion for deeper research, Dr. Michael completed a year-long certification in clinical sexology and then pursued her PhD in Human Sexuality from a specialized private university boasting the world's largest library on the subject. Her dissertation explored the dynamics of sexless marriages, leading to groundbreaking insights that she published in her seminal works. Among her notable books are My Husband Won't Have Sex With Me and The Ultimate Intimacy Guide for Passionate People (also published as A Couple's Guide to Better Sexual Intimacy), alongside hundreds of articles featured in outlets like PsychCentral, YourTango, Fox Magazine, AskMen, and SheKnows.  Dr. Michael has graced national television, radio, and print media, offering expert commentary on a wide range of topics. The Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality (IASHS) was a private, unaccredited, for-profit graduate school and resource center for the field of sexology in San Francisco, California.[2] It was established in 1976 and closed in 2018.

Like all post-secondary schools in California, IASHS was required by California law to register with the State of California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE), an anti-fraud, anti-diploma mill unit of the California Department of Consumer Affairs.[3] IASHS had BPPE "approval to operate", which means that IASHS met the minimum legal standards for "offering bona fide instruction by qualified faculty". That approval was discontinued in 2014.[4] In 2017, the institute's attempt to restart operations was denied.[5][6]

The institute was to be integral to the development of humanistic sexology, emphasizing experiential techniques and sexual pleasure over positivist empiricism. The culture of casual as well as clinical nudity and the inclusion of various bodywork and erotic massage techniques led to the institute being nicknamed "Hot Tub University" or "F**k U" by some critics.[17] The inclusion of Reichian therapy and other scientifically unfounded techniques also led to criticism.[17]
