Both. There is a lot about living in Japan that’s passive aggressive. And it’s a very passive aggressive insult to imply a Japanese guy is Chinese.

Maybe this works with other ethnic conflicts. I don’t know. I’m not about to risk telling an arab muslim guy “shalom! mizrahi?”
