Two of the biggest cases of the 1990's, the WTC and OKC bombings, you know how they caught who did it?
WTC: One of the dudes tried to get the refund back on the rental truck that blew up.
OKC: A random Oklahoma trooper pulled over McVeigh because he was speeding without a license plate. Inside his car was a piece of paper talking about how much TNT they needed to buy. (And IIRC, illegal weapons.)
FBI agents tried to report the 9/11 hijackers were taking flying lessons without bothering to learn how to land, a bunch of them were on watch lists, and the DC office never did anything with this information for like an entire year plus. The story about the USS Cole bombing is even more absurd, the FBI basically told the agents to stop investigating or else they'd have to arrest a bunch of terrorists and that was emotional labor.
It's not just in the US.
The younger of the Bondi terrorists was investigated in 2019 for links to ISIS recruiters. They didn't find any radicalisation.
Then the father applied for a gun licence in 2020 which was approved in 2023. That's an unheard of delay in approving a licence, 6 months maybe, but not 3 years, so I wonder what they found. I'm assuming someone marked it as suspicious, but no one acted on it and just put it aside, then, when the police got criticised for the ridiculous delays, someone just blanket approved the backlog.
The son remained on ASIO's radar when they both travelled to a known terrorist training hotspot in the southern Philippines (neither has any links to the country) a month before the attack.
There was also a massive failure of communication between intelligence services and the police because no one seems to have told anyone else what they knew.
It's going to be fun when they have an enquiry. The level of incompetence has been through the roof already and we haven't even scratched the surface. You can tell when the politicians are panicking, because they're planning on recalling Parliament before Christmas to ram through a bunch of draconian laws targeting lawful firearms owners to deflect from their failures.
