My understanding is that something would have to travel faster than the speed of light to move beyond the boundaries of the observable universe, so that "we could no longer see it".

My assumption is he means it won't be visible to us in any kind of reasonable time for current humans. Like say it's so far out that it would take a million years for the light to reach us.
