The adulthood they're running away from is being confronted with the reality that you don't get better at anything unless you practice it skillfully over time. This goes for learning, work, relationships, just about everything. Being resilient is a skill that no one teaches you, you just have to walk through the fire yourself some of the time and many of these people just couldn't make it through the fire one time and stopped believing 

You can't build self esteem unless you do things that make you proud of yourself, it's like the key building block in git gud.
