If Trump had remained in power he would have been touting the vaccine and how he had personally developed it and was ending COVID and everything else. You're arguing that MAGA would have turned on Trump and he still would have followed them when it was entirely his removal from authority for Biden (stoked by the narrative of the stolen election) that led MAGA to turn vehemently on these things and Trump to follow. There'd be no inciting incident to cause the change while Trump would have every incentive to maintain his false image as doer of everything.

But he did even when he lost.   (I remember reading he does privately and sometimes it escapes in his speeches). He just doesn’t tout it every minute. (Because he realizes his political allies and his base opinions about it)

You are right he may have better incentive to pretend he cares about actual mainstream medicine knowledge If he had won, but the dude was flip flopping about vaccines even when WarpSpeed was full ahead. In the end he just prefers to differ to his nutters like RFK.
