I think you'd probably garner more sympathy if you hadn't beat up an old guy who hadn't actually stolen anything or done any damage to your car. Maybe you left out details, but doesn't sound like an appropriate use of force.

You probably shouldn't hate the criminals, you should hate the system that produced them. Which is capitalism. People who are extremely poor tend to become criminal way more often.

And besides, while I'm not sure what punishment the person would get in this situation, he probably wouldn't get just a slap on the wrist. You don't end up with the largest incarcerated population on the planet with such a policy.
