I think the primary issue with the “correct gendering” in reporting, as others have said, is when papers describe an active male shooter as a “woman in a dress”, bad things can happen.
Thankfully this guy offed himself hy the time any paper wrote anything, but the misdirection (intended or no) is there.
The other issue is attributing crimes like this to women generally. “Wow, women almost never do this! How interesting!” Yeah, very interesting.
