I've seen this at some Chinese places before. People will clearly be finished even if there's some food still left on the plate and push the plate towards the edge of the table and get up. Then they'll be visibly upset it was taken and mutter something like "but I wasn't finished..." Maybe leave it at your spot or push it towards the wall instead?
For some reason I always suspect that if the plates were left they actually wouldn't eat the food left, especially because they never seem to get any more. Though maybe it's some kind of thing where they get full from everything else and since it's still there they'll eat it rather than get up again even if they'd prefer something else?
Lots of room in this world for good survey research but yet it's all wasted on useless topics like national economies or whatever.
