Very annoying phenomenon I recently encountered.

There's this new Lindsey Ellis video about Aladdin. (Don't judge me) and like right in the first two minutes she gets into how some stuff hasn't aged well and that the movie should have a "sorry about our racism" disclaimer before starting. The thing is the example clip she uses for this is a guard grabbing Jasmines arm and saying that thieves get their arm chopped off and I just wonder, how is that racist?



It's literally a thing in Islam

Cross-amputation (Arabic: قطع من خلاف) is a form of punitive judicial limb amputation and one of the Hudud punishments prescribed under Islamic jurisprudence (Sharia law). It involves cutting off the right hand and left foot of the alleged transgressor.[1][2

Even worse, it's still a thing that happens TODAY

The country with the most recent cases is Iran[4] with "at least 223 amputations have been carried out by Iranian authorities out of 384 known sentences since 1979, according to the US-based rights group the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center."[5] There seems to be a gradual transition to finger amputation using a specialized machine since 2013 [1] and particularly since 2019.

Brunei enacted in 2019 "...new penal code, which also includes the amputation of a hand and a foot for the crime of theft."[6] but has not carried out the punishment as of 2025.

Saudi Arabia saw a high of 27 amputations in 2000 [2] but amputation sentences were commuted in 2012[7][3] and no sentences are widely reported since then.

The punishment is also practiced in other countries such as Sudan;[8] Somalia;[9] Mauritania, the Maldives;[10] and Yemen.[11] The practice was common during the ISIS Caliphate and continues to be used in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

Like I guess you could complain about accuracy "well actually they chop off the left foot too! And it wasn't just any robbery, but highway robbery or blasphemy!" but this feels very much like details and I doubt that's the issue she took with the portrayal.

Same thing happened in that "Orientalism in Zelda" that Resetera talked about. In that video the person claims that Harem's weren't Islamic culture and again, they very much were Islamic culture

We really have people, people who put research into their videos, not make the most timid of Wikipedia searches for their claims because in their brain it's just impossible that anything connected to Islam could actually feel medieval or cruel and that it has to be a racist invention. It's just so absurd.
