I was in a conversation recently about how the phenonmenon that "people of color" can't/wont swim was because "people of color" were prevented from access to swimming pools in the segregated south.
I don't even disagree with the assertion if we're talking about black people, but it's bizarre how this broad language just makes otherwise normal sentences incomprehensible at best.
"Wait, I've never heard anyone say latinos can't swim?"
"Oh er, I meant those other people of color... you know the ones."
