This is not an isolated event or trivial group of people. It's a large group of people who are so afraid of being accused of racism/white privilege/lack of female perspective/etc that it has completely altered their personalities and behaviors. And when everyone is trying to be the Superior White Ally by tearing down other white people for insufficient purity you get a lot of asterisks and editorial notes and second guessing and...fear.

The guy gets bonus points for not knowing that Cleopatra was Greek. So compared to literal brownface, Elizabeth Taylor is actually pretty good casting.
