That's exactly why they did it. A trans Robin? Who would care. But making the one character trans who has to be a woman, born on island where only women exist? Now it's a statement, now you're saying "what's yours is mine because I'm exactly as much woman as the character who represents the perfect woman"

The statement is more important than the story or internal logic and it's something I'd argue we often see when they make changes to established characters.
