Aisles are narrow so I turned sideways to let this Japanese office worker guy in his 50s pass. He stops and says “you’re annoying aren't you”. Instinctively respond with “yeah that’s probably right”. And I don’t think he anticipated that I understood him because he started profusely apologizing. Really weird. Sometimes I get homesick for America where I’d get stabbed or shot during such an interaction.I had a friend who was japanese american, born in and raised in japan. Japanese was her first language. But she looked like any white girl you can imagine.
Anyway she was telling me her first job was at some japanese fast food joint, and every day customers would be like “I can’t understand anything you say, your pronunciation is awful!” and sometimes would ask her to switch to English if they could speak it.
