This obviously wouldn't apply to Abdul El-Sayed but from what I would understand about high school handegg where it matters, the South, the "captain" is basically the guy who leads the prayers because it has to be student-led. But more generally, if the team doesn't have a super popular guy I imagine they nominate a second "mascot" who gets to run out first. El-Sayed was a defensive player and the number he's wearing, which mean something in handegg, doesn't indicate he's an important player versus a guy who played because the team was shit anyway:


Like, I don't want to speak well of Mike Rogers, who once was my House member, but he was a high school standout athlete, joined the Army and then worked for the FBI. I have no idea why a guy four to six inches shorter, probably 50+ lbs less and 20+ years younger keeps trying to challenge him to tackle football for the Senate seat and calling him a beta. Well, other than this is what "progressives" want from their candidates now in the Era of Trump.

I would put more stock in El-Sayed's lacrosse experience, especially because he played in college, but this doesn't necessarily mean he was any good because of the lack of players.
