when you say "it may happen," expressing doubt, you are subconsciously summoning up the spectre of the slave owners' doubt that they'll be able to get their slaves to do any work
normally I might recommend that you use the term "possibly" instead, but new research coming out of Harvard seems to indicate that the term has connections to the word "posse," meaning lynch mobs, so it is recommended to avoid terms that indicate doubt altogether until a suitable alternative can be found
