Oh no, the original usage of the term "may" have been racist, therefore I'm so fucking stupid that I can't divorce myself from that possible legacy 100+ years later and I immediately believe that ALL usage of this term is racist.

when you say "it may happen," expressing doubt, you are subconsciously summoning up the spectre of the slave owners' doubt that they'll be able to get their slaves to do any work

normally I might recommend that you use the term "possibly" instead, but new research coming out of Harvard seems to indicate that the term has connections to the word "posse," meaning lynch mobs, so it is recommended to avoid terms that indicate doubt altogether until a suitable alternative can be found
