I guess there were probably a number of officers of the era in the same boat, but thought it was interesting that MacArthur's dad was a colonel in the Civil War.
Pretty remarkable to consider of the pace of technological progress required - and just the raw amount of history that happened in such a short timespan - to go from serving in that war with your horse and your Springfield rifle or whatever, to having your kid ruling over Japan and making calls about dropping nukes in Korea.
