I will say that it's pretty. Very pretty. It's also still likely building on the amazing foundation of wave rendering from AC: Black Flag.
The demo was alright, but it was not fun to have the early quest targets entirely depopulated/decimated/gone when trying to find materials, and no clear indicator that something was supposed to be there but depleted, no countdown timer… just annoying.
Lighting in town, all the in-person stuff, felt very artificial, oversaturated and overexposed. And, of course, in town or encampments is the only time the player is on-foot. None of the ship-to-ship stuff is active gameplay, just a cutscene.
In short, AC: Black Flag is still the GOAT pirate simulator, unless you're willing to go back to Sid Meyer's venerable classic.
