the loss of religion as a societal norm/institution has led to the loss of shame and repression, for good or ill
no longer does anyone have a gut sense of "oh god, I can't do that/wear that/say that, if not because god will judge me then at least because others will judge me," it's been entirely reversed to "I can't criticize others who do that/wear that/say that or I'll lose my livelihood," even if those things aren't a simple matter of preference but actually a very bad idea in real terms, such as phenomenons like fat acceptance
the ability to confidently do anything you want at any time without pushback has led to pure hedonism and the rejection of what is logical or healthy for whatever feels best in the moment
