Easter holds profound significance within the Christian faith community, yet for many of us, it can evoke painful memories and feelings of exclusion.

As members of the LGBTQIA+ community, our upbringing was often intertwined with religion, but unfortunately, our experiences were marred by feelings of hate, rejection, and alienation from our faith community.

However, amidst this pain, there’s a powerful message that I feel compelled to share—a message encapsulated in the image of Jesus, one that resonates deeply with marginalised communities but often eludes mainstream religious interpretations.

While I understand that many hold the Bible as sacred and infallible, my own journey of studying its contents has revealed numerous discrepancies and instances of misrepresentation, particularly concerning the nature of God and the justification of harm in the name of “God”.

The profound significance of Jesus’ death, in my view, remains widely misunderstood within the Christian community. When delving into the narrative of Jesus, what becomes evident is a radical departure from the status quo of religious leadership at the time, provoking discomfort among those who were in power.

Contrary to popular belief, I’ve come to understand that Jesus’ death was not about appeasing an angry deity but rather about challenging and dismantling the oppressive systems perpetuated by religious authorities. His death served as a testament to the unwavering love, compassion, and solidarity he exhibited towards the marginalised and downtrodden.

With each act of love and defiance against religious hypocrisy, Jesus confronted the prevailing narrative of exclusion and judgment. His unwavering commitment to inclusivity, equality, and justice ultimately led to his crucifixion—a symbol not of divine punishment, but of the clash between the radical message of love and the entrenched forces of oppression.

His message takes on renewed relevance as we continue to grapple with issues of discrimination, inequality, and social injustice. The struggles faced by marginalised communities, whether based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status, echo the challenges confronted by Jesus. Like Jesus, we are called to challenge oppressive systems, advocate for the voiceless, and cultivate a community grounded in love and acceptance.

Moreover, Easter serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the possibility of redemption. Despite facing persecution and ultimately death, Jesus’ message of hope and liberation endured, inspiring countless individuals to strive for a more just and compassionate world. As we celebrate Easter, let us not only reflect on the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus but also draw strength from his example to confront injustice, foster unity, and build a society where all are valued and embraced.

Let’s embrace the transformative message of Jesus—a message that challenges us to confront injustice, stand with the marginalised, and embody love in its purest form. In doing so, we honour the true essence of Easter and embody the spirit of compassion and solidarity that Jesus and many other faith leaders exemplified throughout their lives.
