Yeah I think people figured it's just a spin off they can skip or catch on streaming. Like Hobbs & Shaw and the countless Marvel spin offs.
Plus there seems to be some kind of 'limit' to the number of movies that can hit big, perhaps because folks have less money to spend on this kind of thing or they're just not interested.
DUNE II was the big movie for March/April (especially with the 'extended' run) so there is not going to be another DUNE II like hit, unless the movie goes viral or is really really good.
It seems that the audience is just split over a bunch of movies right now (Planet of the Apes, Furiosa, Garfield, The Fall Guy, Civil War) and Apes is winning out, leaving scraps for everything else.
There is also the fact that Fury Road came out way back in 2015. It takes almost a decade for a follow-up which means the original audience is basically gone.
