Do they still do stuff like that? I’m an idiot and it started to click. But I get why people feel let down if those were the expectations.
I miss the old days when Sony spent an hour showing charts and sales figures.
Yeah and the PlayStation thing was abysmal. They switched focus to Live Service games, watched all the bombs and switched back so now their slate is kind of empty.
The Xbox thing was the best in years and some of it looked good but the jury is still out if
A. Everything is good
B. Everything will actually ship (within this decade)
Third party publishers don't have lots of games either, Ubisoft has Assassins Creed and Star Wars. But unlike Nintendo they don't have the balls to make their show just 1 or 2 games.
So instead they fill an hour with trailers of existing live service games in their 4th or 8th year along with ads for games already released.
I don't think this format works anymore because you're just not getting a surprise game reveal for a game that will be released 'this holiday' or even next year that isn't COD or Nintendo.
Microsoft announces something like Gears, which won't release until 2026 at the earliest. They finally have the first alpha gameplay of Perfect Dark, which was announced 6(?) years ago.
75% of what Microsoft showed won't launch for another 18 months at least.
Also as Paul Thurrott said with the number of studios they have now, Xbox must release 1 big AAAA game practically every month to get any return on their investment.
They say millions are watching but I simply don't believe it. The YouTube stream of Geoff Fest had ~500k viewers at its peak.
The Ubisoft show (terrible image quality too btw) had 50k viewers.
The Switch 2 reveal is going to be a complete slaughter for Sony and Microsoft.
Nintendo are going to be announcing a whole slate of release window games at a time when the best Sony and MS can do is say GTA6 might make it in time for cross platform release with our next consoles.
