If it was a leftist it would be an awkward situation and democrats would likely pause a lot of shit to do damage control. But that wasn't the case so whatever Pelosi/Obama/etc were doing behind the scenes should continue. Trump remains a weak candidate, and while I think Biden could beat him post-debate I'm not willing to risk another public fuck up.
Biden staying ensures a never ending cycle between him over extending himself in public events to prove he can still do it, followed by days (weeks?) of him being physically depleted and looking bad as he recovers. Too much at steak to risk on this shit.
I think there is just not enough time to replace Biden unless they replace him with Kamala, which means he also won't be President anymore.
And once that change happens, Kamala will be too busy to deal with setting up her administration and shaking hands with donors and across the globe with allies to effectively campaign.
Also openly challenging Biden before he steps back and losing to Trump would be career ending for the top candidates.
Better to wait until 2028.
All this nonsense about threats to democracy means that the GOP can hide the infighting in the party by being 'united' against the establishment.
But in reality the party is deeply divided. Apart from the group that wants to get rid of Trump, there is also fractions within the MAGA and conservative movements.
While multiple wings of the party support the same policies, they support them for entirely different reasons. Elon Musk is not backing the pro-life ideas based on a religious ideal but because of his own theory regarding the declining birth rates. The far right element is concerned about the 'replacement' of the native population and at the same time the party becomes more diverse. A lot of people did not like the Sikh prayer and Amber Rose being among the first speakers at the RNC. While others didn't like the platform the Democrat union leader got. As usual with conservative parties, the real politik wing that has sympathy for Russian concerns about NATO also isn't broadly supported as David Sacks did not get the cheers he expected.
In fact, I doubt 2016 Trump would be very excited about the 2024 RNC with or without getting shot.
