The term genocide is a high bar. Even Ireland, one of just two European countries who are supporting South Africa's case at the ICJ, have not declared Israel's actions a genocide. The Foreign Secretary is not going to accuse Israel of genocide to a nearly empty House of Commons.

Genocide is a crime beyond the unimaginably terrible. It's beyond murder, beyond human rights violations, beyond war crimes, beyond ethnic cleansing and beyond crimes against humanity. The Rwandan genocide saw more than half a million Tutsi killed (out of a sub million population) and hundreds of thousands of women raped. The holocaust saw the systematic murder of six million Jews, plus millions of non-Jews targeted because of their race, religion, sexuality, politics or disabilities, plus millions of Prisoners of War. Two thirds of European Jews were slaughtered, with 1.7M killed in the space of just three months. It is important to respect how extreme the crime of genocide is. It doesn't matter how horrific Israel's actions are: genocide implies actioned intent to destroy the Palestinian population.

I think Israel is committing a genocide. It is certainly clear that there many in the Israeli leadership want to carry out a genocide. But debating whether it is a genocide isn't particularly meaningful in the short term: we must intervene to stop this even if it falls short. When the world talks about the holocaust we tell ourselves never again. By the time you can be certain something meets that bar it is far, far too late.

The UK is not in a position to stop Israel alone, but the West is. We have to pray that the new US administration is first a Harris one and second thinks differently to Biden.

So how about we knock of this trans genocide bullshit yeah?
